Do you still remember your school’s annual educational trip? Do you remember walking through boring museums with nothing but old, irrelevant pictures and stuff you can’t even recognize? Put your preconceived notions of a science museum to rest: the Ontario Science Centre is rewriting the boring science museum with healthy doses of interaction, imagination and creativity. Children here are given the chance to interact and handle their own way of learning: this not only encourages self learning but it also sparks the excitement in their young minds. Adults, too, rave about the OSC’s fun approach to scientific education.
The OSC consists mostly of science exhibits but they do occasionally showcase art exhibits, as well. The science exhibits are a mix of geology, science of nature, human anatomy, and astronomy. As you walk through the exhibit halls, you’ll stumble across a simulated rainforest, electric ball and wall of bubbles! For those who are more artistically inclined, there’s the must-see play with music and technology exhibit located in the south wing of the centre, in addition to the Ontario Science Centre Aquatic Play fountain and the world’s largest outdoor hydraulophone. What’s a hydraulophone, you ask? Why, it’s an acoustic instrument played by direct contact with water. The hydraulophone is an innovative and smart way to incorporate nature and music. Another exhibit that gets rave reviews is the OMNIMAX movie theatre: it engages learning through playing and primarily focuses on kids below eight years of age.
The centre’s vision of “inspiring a lifelong journey of curiosity, discovery and action to create a better future for the planet” is exactly what museums and educational centers should continuously aim for. Providing children with fun and innovative ways to learn keeps children alert and interested in their surroundings, no matter how complicated a subject they may be. With regards to the Centre’s purpose to delight, inform and challenge the community they serve; the annual number of visitors can definitely attest to how effective the purpose is being conveyed to OSC’s guests.
Visiting The Ontario Science Centre is an affordable and educational bonding experience for the whole family. Who would have thought learning is so much fun, right? Teach your kids to appreciate science and arts at a young age: plan your own weekend family trip to OSC now! Families will appreciate how easy it is to visit this museum. If you happen to be hungry, for example, the Ontario Science Centre is the place to be. Spread out over four levels, the OSC has numerous dining options from Starbucks to made-to-order Stir Fry!
So, have you been to the OSC? If so, what is your favorite exhibit? What are your most fond memories of going through the entire centre? What did the kids love? If you haven’t been yet, stop by after you visit and tell us what you thought of the world’s largest hydraulophone!
